Cravings. Why do we get them and why are they always for foods that aren’t necessarily good for us? Well, ok, the cravings I have are NEVER for foods that are good for me. And no, my cravings have nothing to do with a bun in the oven because this isn’t one, nor will there ever be one! My cravings are just that. Cravings. Big. Fat. Cravings.

When I get a craving, it is usually for my favorite pizza from a great little small-town restaurant called Angelina’s, which is in my little town of Alexandria. It has a thin, crispy, cracker-like crust with a thick, paste-like tomato sauce and lots of real, perfectly melted mozzarella cheese and green olives. Yep, that’s it. Cheese and green olives. Oh, but it is so good. Delicious. Believe it or not, I am not a big fan of meat – especially greasy, fat-filled pepperoni – on my pizza. I’m kind of a veggie pizza gal.

Every now and then, I get a major hankering for Angelina’s cheese and green olive pizza. The kind of hankering that just the thought of it makes my mouth water and I have to remember to keep my mouth closed for fear that I will drool – a lot. When I get this kind of craving, it usually doesn’t go away until it is satisfied.

I also will get giant cravings for sweet things, like recently, when I could not get the thought out of my head that I had to have vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup on it whipped up with a spoon until it was smooth and creamy. Seriously, I bet I thought about it for more than a week. I finally broke down and had it, which you read about previously.

Sometimes, these cravings or maybe more obsessions, really bother me. Especially because they are always for non-healthy, extremely fattening foods. I mean, seriously, I love veggies, but I don’t CRAVE them in that almost mad dog with rabies kind-a-like feeling. You know what I mean? I eat veggies every single day. I eat sweet stuff almost every single day. Like The Skinny Cow white mint chocolate truffle ice cream bars or Weight Watchers lemon snack cakes or the dulce de leche 60-calorie Jell-O.

So why? Why do people, okay, me, have cravings like that? The kind where I almost feel like I would kill (not literally, you sillys) for my favorite ice cream from Cold Stone Creamery or a piece of regular birthday cake or those to-die-for Lofthouse sugar cookies with oh-my-goodness frosting? Why?

I poked around a bit on the Internet for answers and got several – comfort, escape, quick energy, lack of vitamins and minerals, weakness in your glands (pancreas, thyroid, adrenals), overgrowth of yeast in the intestines (yes, really, that is what one site said), addiction (that sounds a little more right!), hormonal imbalance, exhausted, sad, low blood sugar, sensory triggers and the list went on and on.

I didn’t necessarily find one answer, although I have to say I kind of like the addiction answer. Whatever it is, I really do wish I could drool and salivate over things such as broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, asparagus and the likes. Don’t get me wrong, I love veggies, really love veggies, but I really can’t remember a time I drool or salivated for them. Or had that I-have-to-have-that-right-now kind of feeling. It just hasn’t happened.

P.S. I know, I know, you already know this, but I have to say it. Check out Confessions of a Fat Girl on Facebook. C’mon, become a fan. I’ll thank you for it!
