I spent the past weekend in the Twin Cities…it was a wonderful, wonderful weekend. Two plays…two different theatres…it was awesome. AND, I did really well all weekend with my food choices…until Sunday.

I will never choose a brunch buffet over ordering off the menu ever again…or if I do, I will NOT eat like I did on Sunday. Seriously, OMG, I haven’t pigged out like that in more than seven months. It was absolutely ridiculous. Actually, it was stupid. I was so miserable afterward. BUT, the food was heavenly. BUT, so not worth the stomachache or heartburn.

I really don’t know why I did it. And I really wish I hadn’t. I now know better. No more buffets for me.

  1. Don’t be too hard on yourself…we all have occasional lapses!! You’ve been pretty focused, from what I can tell, so this little detour will just be a minor bump in the road.

I grew up in a home where you ate what was there…there was generally only one serving of each component, and although you were never forced to try anything (someone else would gladly eat your share), if you put it on your plate, you were expected to eat it. We didn’t get to choose anything not specifically prepared for the meal(i.e. a peanut butter sandwich instead of the main course). Thus, when I go to a buffet, there is so much to choose from, I tend to overload (eyes bigger than the stomach), and then feel I must finish it all. I really try to limit my visits to buffet restaurants to a couple visits a year, because I do so love the variety, but as I age and the pounds stick to me more, I am also better about smaller portions and less need to try everything!

  2. I have something for you to try if you go to another buffet. I have the 3 plate rule. I only allow myself 3 plates. One salad, one meal, one dessert. I try and scope out the food before I do my first round. That way I can try and make better choices. I do eat what I want at the buffet. But I just try to keep to the 3 plate rule. To anyone who hasnt battled their weight, that might seem like a silly thing. To those of us who are constantly at war, it is a way to try and keep some control.
Keep up the good work! Dont let one slip get you down!

  3. Thanks, Abra, for your comment. You explained the whole buffet situation so well. My eyes were definitely bigger than my stomach! Also, you hit the nail on the head about the need to finish it all. I know I didn’t have to, but I sure felt like I had to. And, no, I am not beating myself up too bad. I’ve moved on and will remember next time how miserable I felt after I ate.

Chubby, I like your suggestion. I will keep that in mind if I ever do a buffet again. For this time, I did only have two plates, but they were full. Full of potatoes….mashed and these heavenly hashbrowns that were made with cream, sour cream and cheese. You know, THOSE kind!!!! And, I also had two rolls with butter, which I haven’t had in forever. Oh, it was so good! But I will definitely keep the three plate rule in mind. Good suggestion.
